VINEYARD: Andrus Reserve is derived from some of our oldest estate vineyards in Napa Valley’s best growing regions. The vineyards are densely planted with 1,815 to 3,000 vines per acre to promote competition and controlled stress on the vines, thus maximizing the concentration of fruit flavors. WINEMAKING: The grapes were harvested in early September through early October 2002. After undergoing an extended maceration period, the wine was transferred to barrel for malolactic fermentation. Aged in 85% new and 15% one-year-old heavily toasted French oak barrels for 16 months, the 2002 Andrus Reserve was bottled without fining and a light filtration in April 2004. ORIGINAL TASTING NOTES: Smoky black cherries, tea, tobacco and cardamom waft from the glass. Silky flavors of berries and milk chocolate envelope the palate with just a hint of spice. Brown cinnamon and dried blackberry characterize the long, lingering finish. Cellaring for ten years or more will enhance its character. CURRENT TASTING NOTES: The 2002 Andrus Reserve has rich red and black berry aromas with red cherries and a soft earthiness on the palate. The finish is extended with firm tannins. Drink now through 2016. FOOD PAIRINGS: Roast Goose Parmentier with Potato Confit, Currants and Cassis, or Osso Buco with Risotto Milanese CHEESE PAIRING: When serving cheese at the winery, we always pair this wine with Saenkanter, a nutty, caramely 5-year aged Gouda. This vintage produced 534 cases as well as 1.5L and 3.0L formats. |
