ORIGIN: The powerful and expressive 2001 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot and 2% Malbec. The firm tannins and concentration of hillside grown fruit are trademarks of this complex, intense and elegantly balanced wine. VINEYARD: The low yielding vineyard is located on a steep hillside at the 2,000-foot elevation on WINEMAKING: The fruit was harvested by hand in October 2001 and macerated on the skins for 31 days. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation in the barrel and was aged for 17 months in new heavily toasted French oak barrels. The wine was bottled without fining or filtering in June of 2003. ORIGINAL TASTING NOTES: This full-bodied Cabernet is marked by luscious aromas of sweet blackberry syrup, cocoa, dark chocolate and brown sugar The palate holds flavors of blackberry, ripe cherries and tobacco leaf. Complemented by firm tannins, the finish is charry and long, with persistent blackberry syrup notes and a slightly floral character. This rich and velvety wine may be enjoyed now or cellared for 15 years or more. CURRENT TASTING NOTES: The 2001 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is a shining example of Cabernet Sauvignon from this distinct growing region. It has strong tannins, but they don't overpower the rich earthy, fruity aromas and flavors on the palate or in the extended finish. Drink now through 2015. FOOD PAIRING: Sage Encrusted Rib Roast with Root Vegetable Ragout This vintage produced 235 cases and is sold out. |
